Do I Need a Website If I Have a Google Business Profile?
STRKR Studios · 21 September 2026
A Google Business Profile gets you found; a website gets you chosen. The profile is free and essential, but it is not a replacement for a website. Below: what has actually changed on Google since 2024, where free AI website builders fit, and a short checklist you can finish this week.
What has changed on Google Business Profile (2024 to 2026)
- Free Business Profile websites are gone. Google turned them off in March 2024. Visitors were redirected to the profile until 10 June 2024, and after that the links stopped working. Google pointed owners to builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Google Sites and WordPress. The lesson: never build your only web presence on someone else's free feature.
- Q&A is being replaced by AI answers. Google discontinued the Business Profile Q&A API in November 2025 and is rolling out an AI answer tool called Ask Maps in its place. Industry coverage says it draws on your profile, your reviews and your website. It is rolling out gradually, so it may not be live for your customers yet, but the direction is clear: your website's content is becoming raw material for the answers people see.
- Messaging options changed. Google's help pages say verified profiles can add a WhatsApp or text option to their contact details in select regions. Check whether the option appears in your own profile.
- Review rules tightened. Industry coverage reports that Google's April 2026 policy update targets staff review quotas and incentivised reviews. Ask real customers, never pay for reviews, and reply to every one.
Why a profile alone is not enough
Think about how a customer really searches. They type "website designers for small business" or "web development companies near me" and the map pack appears. Your profile wins that moment. Then the customer opens three tabs to compare, and your website wins or loses the job. With no website there is nothing to compare: no prices, no service areas, no photos of finished work, and nothing for Google's AI answers to quote about you.
A profile also has one more weakness. You do not control it. Google can change what it shows, remove a feature or suspend a listing, exactly as it switched off free Business Profile websites. A website on your own domain is the one part of your web presence that stays yours.
Can AI build my website for free?
Searches like "create a website with AI", "best free AI website builder" and "create a free website for my business with AI" are everywhere right now, and the honest answer is: yes for a first draft, not for a site that gets found.
- What AI does well: a draft layout and first-pass wording in minutes, which is genuinely useful for ideas.
- What free plans typically leave out: your own domain, removal of the provider's branding, and any link to your Google Business Profile.
- What you still have to do: supply the real facts (services, suburbs, prices, photos), check every claim it writes, and set up local schema and Google Search Console.
- What does not change: you are still renting the site from the platform.
If you would like to see a design before spending anything, STRKR Studios has a free website mockup generator. It is rules-based rather than AI, builds a homepage layout from your answers in about 20 seconds, and the design-system PDF you download is yours to take to any developer.
Best website builder for small business owners, or a person?
The Wix comparison and the Google Sites guide cover the detail. Here is the short version over three years, using published 2026 rand figures:
| Profile only | DIY builder | Fixed-price build | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront | R0 | R0 | R7,500 once-off (Business type) |
| Monthly | R0 | R150-R650 | R0, or R450 with a managed Care Plan |
| 3-year total | R0 | R5,400-R23,400 | R7,500 (R23,700 with 36 months of Care Plan) |
| Ownership | Google's platform | You rent it | You own files, domain and content |
| Who does the work | You | You | The designer |
A builder can cost less if you do everything yourself. The question is what your time is worth and whether you need to be found. For example: if one extra job a month is worth R2,000 to you, a R7,500 site pays for itself in under four months.
Freelance website developer, agency or studio?
Nobody can honestly hand out the title of "best website designers in South Africa", so choose by evidence instead. Before you pay anyone, check that they:
- Publish their prices, so the total is known before work starts.
- Show live examples you can open on your phone, not just screenshots.
- Tell you who builds it. A freelance website developer gives you directness; an agency gives you layers.
- Hand over ownership of your files, domain and content.
- Link your Google Business Profile and add local schema so Google can connect the two.
STRKR Studios is one builder in Pretoria, so you get a freelancer's directness with agency-style clarity: fixed scope, fixed price, a fixed timeline and a money-back guarantee at design stage. See web designer Pretoria for how a build works.
Your checklist for this week
In order of impact, and all free:
- Claim and verify your profile, then make the business name, phone number, hours and service areas match everywhere.
- Pick the most specific primary category for what you sell, then add secondary ones.
- Add your website link and, if your profile offers it, a WhatsApp option.
- Upload real, recent photos of your work and add every service you offer.
- Ask recent customers for reviews (no incentives, no quotas) and reply to every review.
- Put the answers in plain text on your website: prices or price ranges, suburbs served, opening hours and how to book. Those are the questions AI answers try to settle.
- Link the profile and the site both ways and add local business schema. Every STRKR Studios build includes both.
When a profile alone is genuinely enough
If your order book is already full, your work is walk-in trade or pure referral, and you are not trying to win new customers from search, then a well-kept profile can carry you for now. You should still own your domain name in case that changes.
You have outgrown a profile when customers keep asking the same questions, competitors with websites keep beating you in the map pack, or you have to send people a link to Facebook. At that point, a five-page Business website at R7,500 fixed is the sensible next step, and every package price is published so you can compare before you commit.
